The Alexander Technique is a simple, effective method of self-care that people use to achieve a natural, tension-free posture and ease in movement. It helps relieve pain and stress, prevent injuries and accidents, and restore a sense of balance and serenity.

You could compare learning the Alexander Technique to re-learning a language, the language of moving naturally and easily in the body you were born with. Its practice encourages us to use our energy more efficiently, and to respond constructively to the challenges of modern living.

As the years pass, many of us needlessly limit our potential enjoyment of life by adopting restrictive movement patterns and habits of thought. These may lead to physical wear and tear, pain, fatigue, stress-related disorders and possibly illness. Mostly, we are too busy to notice these debilitating patterns until they generate problems of varying severity.

What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is taught by trained teachers who combine observation, dialogue and touch to help students recognise harmful habits, and to change them for good. The physical and mental aspects of the technique are integrated through the teaching of  basic principles, applied to everyday activities.

You will learn how to:

  • balance your head lightly on the spine, taking pressure off neck, back, and joints

  • feel stable yet buoyant by distributing your weight evenly over your feet

  • breathe easily by not interfering with the natural rhythm of respiration

  • respond consciously, rather than habitually, to internal and external prompts to action

  • use far less energy, with more efficiency, as you become better coordinated

  • explore new and stimulating ways of perceiving and doing

Over time, you will notice radical changes. Generally, practice of the Alexander Technique balances muscle tone, extends range of motion, and improves breathing, circulation and digestion.  No matter what your age, learning the technique will increase your chances of enjoying life-long wellness and vitality.
